Measuring Living Standards: Household Consumption and Wealth Indices Introduction

چکیده

A common theme throughout the notes in this series is the examination of disparities in a particular health variable (be it health status, or usage of health services, or payments for health care, or whatever) across people with different standards of living. For example, the concern might to be to see whether gaps in health outcomes between the poor and better off have grown, or whether they are larger in one country than another. This raises the question of how best to measure living standards. One approach is to use “direct” measures, such as income, expenditure or consumption. Another is to use a “proxy” measure, making the best use of available data. One popular approach in this vein is to use Principal Components Analysis to construct an index of “wealth” from information on household ownership of durable goods and its housing characteristics.

Issues in the construction of wealth indices for the measurement of socio-economic position in low-income countries

BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies often require measures of socio-economic position (SEP). The application of principal components analysis (PCA) to data on asset-ownership is one popular approach to household SEP measurement. Proponents suggest that the approach provides a rational method for weighting asset data in a single indicator, captures the most important aspect of SEP for health stud...

Measuring disparities in sanitation access: does the measure matter?

OBJECTIVE Initiatives to monitor progress in health interventions like sanitation are increasingly focused on disparities in access. We explored three methodological challenges to monitoring changes in sanitation coverage across socio-economic and demographic determinants: (i) confounding by wealth indices including water and sanitation assets, (ii) use of individual urban and rural settings ve...

Measuring living standards with proxy variables.

Very few demographic surveys in developing countries have gathered information on household incomes or consumption expenditures. Researchers interested in living standards therefore have had little alternative but to rely on simple proxy indicators. The properties of these proxies have not been analyzed systematically. We ask what hypotheses can be tested using proxies, and compare these indica...

Household Saving in LDCs : Credit Markets , Insurance and Welfare *

Empirical evidence from some LDCs is used to look at (i) household borrowing and lending, their importance and timing, an...

Measuring Inequality with Asset Indicators

This paper examines whether, in the absence of information on household income or consumption, data on household infrastructure, building materials, and ownership of certain durable assets can be used to measure inequality in living standards. Principal components analysis is used to obtain a relative measure of inequality, and a bootstrap prediction method is provided for use when auxiliary su...
